How Do PF and ESIC Change After Salary Revision?

When salary increases due to minimum wage, VDA, promotion or correction, PF and ESIC may also change. The employer should recalculate both contributions from the correct effective month and check whether any arrears are required.

How Do PF and ESIC Change After Salary Revision?

A salary revision can also change PF and ESIC.

The basic process is:

Salary Revision → Check PF → Check ESIC → Check Arrears → Update Payroll

1. What Happens to PF?

For most covered establishments:

Employee PF = 12%

Employer Contribution = 12%

If the applicable PF wage increases after salary revision, PF contribution may also increase.

Example

Old PF Wage: ₹20,000

Employee PF @ 12%: ₹2,400

New PF Wage: ₹22,000

Employee PF @ 12%: ₹2,640

Difference: ₹240

Employer contribution should also be recalculated according to applicable EPF rules.

Important: Salary increase does not always mean PF will increase by the same amount. PF depends on the applicable PF wage, ceiling and contribution arrangement.

2. What Happens to ESIC?

Current ESIC contribution rates are:

Employee: 0.75%

Employer: 3.25%

If the applicable ESIC wage increases, both employee deduction and employer contribution normally increase.

Example

Old ESIC Wage: ₹18,000

Employee ESIC: ₹135

Employer ESIC: ₹585

New ESIC Wage: ₹20,000

Employee ESIC: ₹150

Employer ESIC: ₹650

3. What If Salary Crosses ₹21,000?

Do not automatically stop ESIC immediately.

If an employee crosses the ESIC wage ceiling during an ongoing contribution period, coverage generally continues until that contribution period ends, subject to applicable ESIC rules.

4. What If Salary Revision Is Backdated?

Example:

Revision Effective: 1 April

Revision Processed: June

Then April and May may also need review.

Check:

  • Salary arrears
  • PF difference
  • ESIC difference
  • Employer contribution difference

Do not update only the current month.

Quick Checklist

✅ Correct salary effective date
✅ PF wage recalculated
✅ Employee PF recalculated
✅ Employer PF recalculated
✅ ESIC wage recalculated
✅ Employee ESIC recalculated
✅ Employer ESIC recalculated

Conclusion

After salary revision, do not update only the employee salary.

Salary → PF → ESIC → Arrears → Payroll
